Let's discover together the diverse career pathways and opportunities we have after completion of a Science PhD! Parkville Career Forum will be hosting Dr Maja Divjak, scientific animator at the Gene Technology Access Centre and Dr Amy Choi, the ANZ Head of Commercial Operations for Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. Come and join us for the 5th event of "What is Out There?" series. It was great having Dr. Maja Divjak and Dr. Amy Choi in out fifth WOT event. Maja shared with us her passion for artistry and making science look beautiful and understandable through animations. Amy shared her passion for the commercial and corporate world behind the Pharma Industry. With their experience and stories, they inspired us and expanded our views in the different career options available within the science field. The forum was interactive and open for discussion, with very good feedback from both audience and speakers.
Parkville Career Forum will be hosting Dr. David Bowser, Management Consultant Principal at Nous group, and Dr. Tom Keeble, Neuroscience communicator at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health for our 4th event in the "What is Out There?" series. It was both a pleasure and fantastic opportunity to host Dr. David Bowser and Dr. Tom Keeble for our fourth event in the "What is Out There?" series. Both shared impressive stories of initial post-doctoral endeavors in their respective fields, but also what drove them to explore alternative career paths to academia. The forum emphasised how the skills and attributes they had developed as a scientist's had served them well moving into a different career path, but highlighting the challenges and approaches which made the transition possible. The forum was interactive and very open for discussion, only being halted due to time constraints.
Monash Parkville Forum will be hosting Dr. Brittany Howard, IP professional who works for Watermark Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys and Dr. Sarah Meachem , director of Australian Society for Medical Research, for the 3rd event of "What is Out There?" series . We had a good turnout for the evening. It was great to welcome back an alumni, Dr. Brittany Howard who gave a great presentation about her motivations behind transition from research to Intellectual property and the lessons she learnt throughout the process. Dr. Sarah Meachem shared her valuable experience about engaging in many leadership and advocacy roles as well as being an academic researcher, which was an inspiration to all of us.
Followinging a very successful 1st event, Monash Parkville Forum will be hosting our 2nd "What is Out There?" event on the 17th Oct, 2015. At this event, we will be hearing from Dr Tom Peat, Senior Pricipal Research Scientist at CSIRO, and Dr Kurt Lackovic, Business Development Manager at WEHI. There was a great turnout for this event. Dr Tom Peat and Dr Kurt Lackovic were both very engaging, and the students in the audience interacted enthusiastically with them. Both speakers explained to us their respective career paths and how they transitioned to where they are now. Dr Kurt Lackovic highlighted the importance of networking, and the students learned from Dr Tom Peat that it's okay to not know exactly where you are going, as long as you take the leap when opportunities arise.
We are happy to announce that we will host our inaugural event on Friday 15 Aug 2014. Emma Stuart, scientific coordinator at WEHI, and Julia Cianci, project manager at BIOTA, will join us to share their career experiences and answer our questions! It was a great pleasure to host our two speakers, who were honest about their career path including challenges and proud moments. The forum was very interactive, and conducive to open discussion about scientific careers. We gained a better understanding of the range of possibilities on offer in the biotech industry, as well as the importance to be adaptable and ready for new opportunities.
